While winter settles in here in Boston, we all are dreaming of warmer days. Days where we can grab lunch, a blanket, and soak up the sun outside. While those days are a little ahead of us, we’re compiling the best picnic spots in the city for when the sun is shining!
Dorchester Heights, South Boston
Tucked away on a hill in the middle of the neighborhood, Dorchester Heights is the highest point in South Boston and also showcases a view of the downtown skyline, making it a great spot for sunset. Grab some treats from American Provisions nearby and set up a blanket on top of the hill for great dog – and sunset – watching.
The Public Garden, Back Bay
This one should be a given for most Bostonians but in the Spring, the Boston Public Gardens was actually one of the first public botanical gardens in America. Nestled in the middle of the city, it also makes for a great picnic spot. With plenty of restaurants and coffee shops surrounding the park, you can either BYO or pick-up take out.
Hatch Shell, Back Bay
In other years, this would be the go-to spot for musical performances. This outdoor concert venue may not be playing any live music anytime soon, but the sprawling grass makes it great for outdoor gatherings. You’ll catch frisbee players and yoga students alike here, taking in the fresh air and views.
Piers Park, East Boston
Looking for food and views? This park has one of the best views of Downtown Boston. With gorgeous views, places to sit (tables and benches) what more could you ask for in a picnic spot!
Amory Playground, Brookline
Each time I visit Amory Playground, I’m astounded by it’s size. It’s massive – and features tennis courts and a nature preserve, Hall’s Pond Sanctuary (one of the two natural ponds remaining in Brookline). Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s are quick walks away, making it a great spot to enjoy any meal outdoors.
The Rose Kennedy Greenway, Downtown Boston
If you’re a fan of food trucks, the Rose Kennedy Greenway is the place for your next picnic. The trucks rotate on a daily basis and consist of more than 30 different food trucks. For a schedule, visit the Greenway’s website to plan out your next meal.
Olmsted Park, Jamaicaway
City Square Park, Charlestown
If you’re looking for a picnic spot with more art, look no further than City Square Park in Charlestown. This historic park has landscaped paths and lawns and city views.
Medal of Honor Park, South Boston
The park includes a fenced-in playground for kids and is surrounded by charming brownstones. The park is very pet-friendly and if you’re lucky, you’re able to catch a baseball game or two. It’s close to many South Boston restaurants and a Stop & Shop for gathering all your outdoor meal needs.
