No event has shaped American history like the Civil War. From 1861 to 1865, the United States was torn in half by a conflict that took up to a million Americans’ lives. Texas declared its secession from the United States and joined the Confederate States during the Civil War, but Texas was mainly used in a supply capacity throughout the war. Nevertheless, Texas played a significant role in the Civil War that historians continue to study today.
