snap medicaid waived texas

SNAP and Medicaid renewal requirements have been waived temporarily due to Covid-19. The Texas Health and Human Services Commission are postponing renewal requirements to help aid those already receiving benefits through this tough time.

The food assistance program is federally funded that helps low-income families buy nutritious food from local food stores. Additionally, SNAP is accepted at Farmers Markets, which is often forgotten.

As of February 2020, 3.2 million Texans qualified for SNAP benefits. The HHS said it’s clients’ benefits will automatically renew to ensure they are covered throughout this public health crisis.

What does this mean for those receiving SNAP benefits? For one, they will not have to not have to go into an office, make a phone call or complete an application. Which is a major relief for families trying to make sense of everything going on currently.

In a press release, HHS Deputy Executive Wayne Salter said, “During this difficult time, we’re making sure Texans in need continue to receive their food and medical benefits without the added worry of having to renew their coverage in the midst of a crisis.”

Texas Governor Abbott along with the Texas HHS are asking the United States Department of Agriculture to allow SNAP recipients to use their benefits at take-out and drive-thru restaurants. This could greatly reduce exposure by allowing recipients to avoid busy grocery stores, further spreading the virus.

Governor Abbott told reporters, “I urge the federal government to quickly approve this waiver, giving Texans another food option during this public health emergency.”

As it currently stands, the country is still on pause. Fortunately, we have Texas leaders putting Texans first in this time of need.
