This weekend, you won’t want to miss the incredible dance competition, but you definitely won’t want to miss out trying some authentic — and delicious — Native American food.
It’s all part of a Native American Pow Wow being held at Traders Village Sept. 20-22. Several hundred Native Americans who represent dozens of tribes are expected to participate in the annual event that celebrates their culture and heritage. All events at Traders Village, located at 2602 Mayfield Road in Grand Prairie, are free of charge. It does cost $4 to park your car for the day.
Pow Wows are a Native American’s way of renewing old friendships and making new ones, along with renewing their culture and preserving their rich heritage.
And while the big dance competition, which takes place throughout the weekend, is a big focal point of the event, the selection of food at the Pow Wow will certainly be memorable.
The Indian food booth serves authentic Native American foods, from fry bread to Indian Tacos.
Frybread is a flat dough bread that’s either fried or deep-fried and is often enjoyed with honey, jam, powdered sugar, venison or beef. It’s also typically made with tacos. It originated more than 150 years ago when the United States forced Indians living in Arizona to make a 300-mile journey and relocate to New Mexico onto land that they couldn’t easily farm vegetables or beans.
Also expect to see some of the most common Native American food crop for lunch and dinner, from beans and squash to pumpkins, rice and sweet potatoes.
While you’re enjoying a nice lunch, make sure to be respectful during the Pow Wow dance competition. Before it begins, Native American veterans bless the ring and you’re asked to refrain from eating and talking at that point.
The Pow Wow also includes a market where Native American artists, craftsman traders from across the county will sell their wares.
