In an effort to promote National Fishing and Boating Week, you can fish for free at any public body of water in Texas this Saturday, June 6, according to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD).
“Free Fishing Day is a wonderful opportunity for anglers to share their knowledge, skills, equipment, and love for fishing with a new participant, yet it’s also more than that,” said Craig Bonds, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department inland fisheries director. “We hope those trying fishing on this special day will also learn that purchasing a license is an act of conservation. A fishing license purchase is one of the simplest and most effective way people can support fisheries science and management.”
Where to Go in DFW for Free Fishing Day
Grab your fishing pole, get some bait, and spend the day at one (or several) of these top fishing spots in the Dallas/Fort Worth area this Saturday. Make sure to check before you go for updated safety policies, hours, and more due to the coronavirus pandemic.
1. White Rock Lake
Fishing for crappie? White Rock Lake located in northeast Dallas is the place to be for Free Fishing Day. While a smaller lake, it has beautiful views, ample parking and picnic tables, and two boat ramps (under 10.5 horsepower).
2. Lake Ray Hubbard
In the summer the lower end of Lake Ray Hubbard becomes a hotspot for crappie and white bass among brush piles. Located one mile west of Rockwall, it has multiple parks including Paul Jones Park that has four concrete boat lanes with lots of parking spots and no entrance fees.
3. Lewisville Lake
At a whopping 29,592 acres, Lewisville Lake located in Denton County is one of the biggest public lakes in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. With such a large body of water, you have even more space to spread out for a quiet fishing day or explore new spots you may have not seen before. It boasts several different types of bass, crappie, and catfish along with easy boat access. At Hidden Cove, you can find restrooms, cleaning stations, live bait, and parking.
4. Lake Grapevine
Known for its big bass, Lake Grapevine is a kid-friendly lake that boasts parks like Oak Grove Park that has covered picnic areas, a marina, three boat ramps, restaurants, and large play areas. It’s the perfect place to enjoy some free fishing this Saturday while providing kids endless hours of entertainment.
5. Eagle Mountain Lake
If you live in Fort Worth and don’t want to travel to Dallas, Eagle Mountain Lake located in Tarrant County is one of the best lakes to visit on Free Fishing Day. If you want to fish from your boat, head over to the east side of the lake to a boat ramp off of Mountain Creek Parkway. The best part? Gorgeous hills and bluffs cover the lake area offering breathtaking views!
6. Your Local Neighborhood Pond or Lake
If your family doesn’t want to drive farther than your own backyard, look up your nearest neighborhood pond or lake to fish at for free this Saturday. Pack a lunch, grab some fishing gear, and enjoy a fun-filled day that’s close to home.
