Dallas ISD will not let the current pandemic stop the Class of 2020 from celebrating their accomplishment. A standing ovation was given to recent graduates last week, and more are set to take place throughout this week.
The Dallas ISD Ovation happened this past Thursday at 7 p.m. and ran for 15 minutes. All of Dallas was asked to step outside their homes to honor the senior Class of 2020.
Everyone was asked to cheer, make noise, and share photos online with the hashtag #DallasISDOvation. According to Superintendent Dr. Michael Hinojosa, “This class was born right after 9/11 and, of course, they’ve had a tough year this year. Just like we cheered on our first responders, our senior class deserves an ovation from everybody in town.”
Commencement ceremonies will be live streamed for all 40 of the district’s high schools on the district’s website and Spectrum channels 98, 1300,1301.

This effort is to continue celebrations while standing behind the district’s decision to not hold in-person graduations. Considering recent events and how this pandemic continues to evolve, this decision to avoid in-person graduations is because of safety concerns. At no fault of the graduates, this is the best way to celebrate their accomplishments.
The question is still in the air for the next graduating class on whether or not this will be the new normal for graduation ceremonies. The Dallas ISD is currently working on plans for the upcoming school year, and Superintendent Hinojosa is fast-tracking new ideas on how schools will be structured.
Potential for a hybrid school model may begin as early as the next school year.
