Since the release of several tried and tested COVID 19 vaccines, everyone is looking to book their first and second appointments for the vaccine. This is the case among the residents of Boston, Massachusetts. According to the state health department, Massachusetts has administered around 1.2 million first doses and 1.8 million second doses so far.
The government was using Boston landmark, Fenway Park to facilitate vaccine administration up until now. This changed as Governor Charlie Baker recently announced that the state is moving its mass vaccination site. The site will move to the Hynes Convention Center, on Boylston St.
The government plans to move from Fenway Park before April 1st, 2021. This is when the Boston Red Sox are set to make their home debut. But, those with a vaccination appointment before March 27, will get the vaccine at Fenway Park. However, don’t let this announcement stress you. The Hynes Convention Center’s opening dates will overlap with Fenway Park’s closing dates. You can begin setting your appointments on March 18th at the Hynes Convention Center.
What Does the Priority COVID Vaccine Recipient List Look Like in Boston and Massachusetts?
If you are questioning how this affects the vaccination priority eligibility criteria in Massachusetts, then wonder no more. The priority recipients list stays the same for those who are sixty-five years or older. The same goes for people that have underlying conditions that put them in the vulnerable group. But, Governor Baker announced that the state has expanded its priority eligibility criteria. It will now include up to 1 million people effective March 11th.
The eligible groups include child care workers, teachers, and school staff. However, Governor Baker says at this moment the state cannot specifically allocate doses for the above-mentioned groups. This is due to the state only receiving 150,000 doses per week. This means the priority hierarchy will still be maintained, depending on the number of vaccines received from the federal government.
Will the Location Change Affect the Number of Appointments in Boston?
No, the number of vaccine appointments won’t suffer due to the location change. Governor Baker says the Hynes Convention Center is administering around 1,500 vaccinations every day. In fact, the government estimates the vaccinations to increase to 5,000 per day depending on the supply.
Several people have complained that the booking sites are slow. This is due to large-scale appointment booking requests. Therefore, if you are a Massachusetts resident we suggest keeping an eye on appointment websites. Remember the new COVID mass vaccination site is at the Hynes Convention Center.
