History of Beacon Hill, Boston

Beacon Hill is one of the most charming and historic neighborhoods in Boston. It’s also one of the most desirable (and pricey!) neighborhoods in the city. Beacon Hill is named for the location of a former beacon which was settled on the highest point in central Boston and used to warn Bostonians of an invasion.

With streets lined with Victorian brick row houses lit by antique lanterns, it’s no wonder why Beacon Hill is one of the best places to see Christmas lights in the city.

Where are the Best Christmas Lights in Beacon Hill?

Unlike other places in Boston, the lights in Beacon Hill can be found scattered throughout the neighborhood. While the popular Charles Street has many glistening shops, it’s the hidden gems of the residential streets that run alongside the main street that have uniquely decorated homes.

Strolling along the popular Charles Street, you’re bound to find many shop windows decorated for Christmas. The Happy Journey children’s store, which sells fine children’s toys, really decked out their window for the season (photo below).

Other shops, like Rouvalis flower shop, look beautiful day or night for the holidays. With lights, garland, and wreaths strung across the storefront, it’s hard not to stop and stare at this shop.

One of the best stops to make along Charles Street in Beacon Hill is the famed Beacon Hill Chocolates. Each holiday season, they deck their store out and feature chocolates so beautifully decorated, you almost don’t want to eat them. After an evening of walking the historic streets, stop in for a sweet treat.

After grabbing dessert, head to The Sevens, a small neighborhood pub on Charles Street, which also has a stunning exterior Christmas light display.

Parking & Transportation to Beacon Hill

Beacon Hill is easily accessible via the MBTA. You could take the Red Line to Charles/MGH to start on the most West side of Charles Street. You can also take the Green Line to Park Street and walk about five minutes to the Eastern side of Charles.

While you can drive to Beacon Hill, parking is limited and metered. The Boston Commons also offers a parking garage, located beneath the park. If you’re able, the MBTA is your best bet!
