As the weather begins to warm in New England, many residents are wondering when the beaches will open up again. However, the decision will depend on discussions with the governors of other New England states.
While Massachusetts’s state-managed coastal beaches remain open during the COVID-19 pandemic, coastal beach parking areas are now temporarily closed.
When asked about it during a press conference, Governor Baker said, “Well, so far, with respect to beaches, our policy has been to not open up the parking lots. That was just based purely on the behavior we saw when they were open over two nice days over a weekend when people were not abiding by or paying any attention to distancing rules.”
While the parking lots are closed, people who live nearby can still walk to the beaches.
Although staying at home is encouraged, according to the DCR’s website, healthy, outdoor recreational activities remain open and accessible to the public. This includes walking, hiking, jogging, and bike riding in Massachusetts state parks.
What’s not permitted? Sitting, sunbathing, and other stationary recreational activities. Additionally, athletic and recreational activities that bring participants into close contact are banned.
One thing is for sure: whether it’s a decision regarding beaches, parks, or playgrounds, it’s a decision that the New England states will need to make together, as it will impact everyone.
