McMullen Museum of Art: Mariano: Variations on a Theme

This September exhibit coming up in Boston will be the first major exhibition to display works by Cuban artist Mariano Rodríguez. The retrospective will feature more than 140 oil paintings, water colors and drawings bringing together some rarely seen works and archives. In a career that spanned six decades of the 20th century, Rodríguez explored his own Cuban expression, adopting themes of national identity to become an artist of extraordinary style and consequence. A new exhibit coming up in Boston this September will feature the works of New York–based interdisciplinary artist, performer, and musician, Raúl de Nieves. His practice is made up of multifaceted creations ranging from stained-glass-style narrative paintings to animated performances, to densely adorned figurative sculptures. In The Treasure House of Memory the artist brings to viewers a body of interconnected works that are rooted in memory and explore themes around personal transformation. The works in the exhibition showcase the artist’s way of looking at iconographic traditions which he presents using vibrant amalgamations of form and material.
