This has been a tough year for many people and families around the Boston area. If you’re looking to give back this holiday season, we’ve outlined a few volunteer and giving opportunities in the area.

The Greater Boston Food Bank

Individual volunteers are needed now more than ever at The Greater Boston Food Bank. The organization works to end hunger across Eastern Massachusetts in more than 190 communities by providing healthy food and resources they need to thrive. Volunteers are needed for Tuesday and Wednesday shifts (9AM – 12PM or 1PM – 4PM) and Thursdays (9AM – 12PM and 1:30PM – 4PM).

American Red Cross of Massachusetts

The organization is always looking for those interested in donating blood. With a variety of locations, you’re able to schedule an appointment at a location that is convenient for you.

MSPCA Angell

Many MSPCA shelters are still adopting animals. While volunteer opportunities are limited, you still are able to donate to this cause by donating cat and dog food to the organization, so they can distribute to pet owners in need around the area.

Boston Teachers Union

Families need help now more than ever. You can sign up to help deliver essential items and groceries to Boston Public School families who are enrolled in the Food Distribution Program. The program serves 550 families and delivers hygiene kits, books, clothing, diapers, wipes, and other requested items. Drivers will deliver to 7-10 families (all efforts will be made to keep houses close together!).

Rosie’s Place

While on-site volunteering has been suspended due to the pandemic, there are some ways to take action to help. The women’s shelter is looking for volunteers to help with Census Phone Banking, mask donations, and a virtual food bank.

Boston Cares

Not sure what type of volunteer opportunities are right for you? Boston Cares is the largest volunteer agency in New England and supports 180 Greater Boston schools and non-profit agencies. Boston Cares offers a wide array of programs and opportunities that make it simple for you to volunteer, regardless of your schedule. Think of it as a matchmaker for volunteer programs.

Massachusetts Housing & Shelter Alliance

The Massachusetts Housing & Shelter Alliance needs resources to help support as COVID-19 continues. The site has a list of agencies with volunteer (and employment) opportunities, along with specific donation needs.

Do you know of any additional organizations looking for volunteers this season? Please let us know in the comments.
